The Miracles of July and August

There have been miracles in my life the past eight weeks.

Some little things, which I still consider miracles, and some very big ones too.  Things which I can't truly credit to anyone but the Lord himself.

My life was changed forever nine short weeks ago.  Little did I know how deep the death of my mother would affect me.  It's one of those things that you can never predict.  You try to prepare for when you are walking someone through a long illness or time of frailty.  One thing I've learned is that you can never ever prepare for the loss.  It's always worse than you expect and cuts deeper for me than in my wildest dreams.

Miracle no. 1:
I have been changed on the inside.

I have new understanding for those who are grieving also, especially  those who have lost a mother or father.  It's a miracle.  I couldn't connect to people before emotionally because I had not experienced that pain.  Now I have.  I hopefully am more in tune to other's grief and can show more understanding.   Yet I know for certain I can never fully understand the depth of anyone else's grief because each experience is unique.
I've also learned there are many who do not understand my grief or do not feel comfortable around my grief.  I used to be where they are.  I was them.  Now I am different because of my pain.  I wish it were not pain which makes me different, but it is.  No one ever wants this kind of pain.  Loss of a loved one will always change your life forever.  It is a difficult place to be, yet it is a miracle.

Miracle no. 2:
My daddy is still doing alright.  This is huge.  So huge I can't even begin to describe it.  The absence of his grief for his bride is just unbelievable almost.  Yet it is true.  He has in the fore front of his mind lost her.  She has disappeared to a place we cannot understand.  Yet she is there I fully believe still right there in his heart.  The miracle of Alzheimer's Disease, the miracle of a beastly disease is my dad's protection from grief in these months after Mom's death.  I am in shock quite frankly, yet so very grateful and in complete awe of how God works.  I can honestly say I hate this disease so very much at times, which has stolen my daddy away from us.  Yet, the question remains, how can I hate it, if it is a blessing in the same breath?  Oh this relationship with Alzheimer's and myself, it truly is quite a mystery to me.

Miracle no. 3:
I have a family who loves me..... yes I do.   They have been there for me at the highest capacity that they could be.  Yes, even my sons, ages 8 and 11, who can sense when I'm having a sad moment and literally rush to my side.  "Mommy, are you sad?  Mommy are you ok?  Mommy let me give you a hug."  My favorite is from Philip.  He gets very close and examines my eyes so carefully, "Are you crying?" with a concerned smile that melts my heart.  To have such advocates in such a time as this.  It's a miracle.

Miracle no. 4:
Photographs.  I. love. photographs.  They are my treasures.  They are my history.  They bring back memories and smiles, tears too.  I have boxes upon boxes of photos.  I have over 10,000 digital photos in my photo library on my hard drive from the past 11 years.  Then two weeks ago, my hard drive died.  I thought I'd lost almost a year's worth of photography.  Not just "any" photos either.  They were Dad's 79th birthday.  Mom's 82nd birthday.  Easter with Michael's family.  Our trip to Philadelphia, and Charleston, South Carolina.  And hundreds upon hundreds of other photos, all gone we thought.  Until....my husband Michael spent a week on finding a program which would recover them and we have.  A technology miracle.  Now THAT was a big one!  I have my pictures again and will never wait long to back up my hard drive ever again!

Miracle no. 5:
The sale of a condo.  After 17 months on the market, Mom and Dad's condo is selling.  Another huge miracle from God. We have been praying for more than 17 months.

Miracle no. 6:
The compassion of a home owners association board.  For months I had brought a concern to the HOA board at the condo building where my folks place is up for sale.  I was shut down with a big fat, "NO" we will not be doing this for you and the other residents on your floor.  This issue was hurting the sale of the condo and other residents.  I started writing a letter after feeling so incredibly defeated from a phone call with the board president.  It took me 4 drafts and one week to write a letter.  I didn't even know if I should send a letter in fact.  I finally had it ready to email.  Then I received an email.  The board changed their mind and decided, "YES" to taking care of this issue.  And I had not sent my letter at all!
I will tell you that I was so upset about this issue that I heard my mother's voice, (no joke), loud in my head the night after the defeating phone call.  She told me, "Judith, now don't you worry yourself one more minute about this.  It's going to be ok.  You need to focus on other things, like your husband, your (my) boys, school starting up and your own well being!"  She was so very right.  So right.  It is what she would have told me if she had been alive.  They also were truly God's words, but just in the form of her voice.  My how he uses things to reach us!  My mother's voice!

Miracle no. 7
Two old hymnals.
A Methodist Hymnal and a Presbyterian Hymnal.  The Methodist one is from the 1950's.  It came from the gentleman that owned our mountain house before we did.  It has his name on the inside cover.  It was given to us by him.

The Presbyterian Hymnal was my mother's.  It is from the early 1930's probably came from the church she grew up in.

I have been reading these hymns of old the past 2 months and they have ministered to me as much as Scripture at times, really because they are so full of Scripture.  What I love about reading lyrics to songs is that it is someone's heart on paper.  It is their heart for the Lord.  Precious words shared, many not put to music for years or decades later.  I have found so many treasures in hymns which I do not even recognize, but whose words I'm drawn to.  They are glorious comforts to me.

I remember so well singing many of these familiar hymns beside my mother and father in church or in the children's choir.  They are like old friends.  We will be introducing some of these hymns to our sons this year.  I can't wait!

Miracles.....some things I never thought would happen, didn't expect what so ever.  Some things I thought were decided already.  Some are people.  Some are small comforts that have become big comforts.  All blessings from God.

It's so special to feel tangible love from the Almighty.  I found myself saying to him, "Again Lord??  Again?"  I have been pinching myself with gratitude. I almost feel numb.  Is this real?  Why yes, it is.  His love is real.  He must have known I needed extra love without Moma these past few weeks.

God has amazed me all over again.  He's shown me that he is there.  He has shown that his promises are true.
"Never will I leave you nor forsake you."
"I will guide you in the way you should go."
"I will lift you up on eagles wings...."

It has been so awesome to experience these manifestations of God's love in my life.

So very thankful and humbled...
Mom would then say, "Make sure you thank him!"
Oh my Mom!  Am I ever!

Don't Worry About Tomorrow

"....tomorrow will take care of itself. "  ~ Jesus
Matthew 6:34

Those are the words of Jesus to his disciples.  He knows how our minds work.  He knows we humans fixate on things.  We worry.  We have anxiety.  We don't let go of thoughts which can disable us and keep us in a place where Jesus doesn't want us to be.  The mind is the battlefield where we always fail with doubts.  Jesus loves us so much he gave us physical reminders in His creation of that love and provision and he tells his disciples about it.  "Look at the birds of the air.....the lilies of the field...." then he goes on to describe how the Father takes care of his creation and if he does take care of these how much more do we human beings mean to Him oh us of little faith?

Flowers and Birds....amazing, those are some of my favorite things.  Let's add butterflies to that too.

I saw this in my garden this morning..... among the dead flowers that have bloomed out a month ago and have gone to seed.  A few pink Zinnias, and small sunflowers are a few remaining  bright spots around the deck right now.

He was right on top of this little pink Zinnia eating his breakfast.....
This beautiful little butterfly, so intricate with detailed face and wings.  He was getting his breakfast just fine.  My flowers were providing him a feast of nectar.  Exactly what he needed.
We have needs too as God's children.  Food, clothing, shelter, and more..... God promises us He will provide all of those things in Matthew 6:25-34.  He thinks more of us than this little guy on my Zinnia.  Is this little butterfly full now?  Did he receive the nourishment he needed?  Absolutely! Did he worry he wouldn't get his breakfast?  Absolutely not!

God provides for me too, even those life situations which may worry me the most.
I need to remember Jesus cares about my mind and my mental well being.

Worry drains me of energy, that vital energy which I need to do the things that are important to God.  Worry and anxiety keep me in a place where I don't need to be.  Fixating on stressful circumstances in my life do not allow me to have joy.  So, letting go and letting Jesus enter my mind is the next step.  Jesus' next words to his disciples are crucial to their well being.
"Seek first my kingdom and my righteousness and all of these things will be added unto you."
Keep seeking Him and His righteousness.  He wants us to pursue Him, to focus on Him and believe with all of our hearts that He is ableBecause the truth remains,  He is!!

From Matthew 6:25-34  (New American Standard Bible)

25 “ For this reason I say to you, [a]do not be worried about your [b]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26  Look at the birds of the [c]air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being worried can add a single [d]hour to his [e]life? 28 And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But [f]seek first [g]His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be [h]added to you.
34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will [i]care for itself. [j]Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The Little Girl From 4th Ward

Who was this little girl from 4th Ward?  This tiny, little girl, with the infectious smile?
At camp ready for swimming in 1940
 She was my Mom.

She was raised with her two sisters, by her mother during the Great Depression of the 1930's and WWII in the 1940's.  She and her sisters and mother all together standing strong during very tough times when sometimes there was not much to smile about.

Yet they were always smiling in photos.  They had joy!

My Grandmother had an inner strength, peace, and joy due to her faith.  She helped to instill a love of Christ in her girls.  She taught them how to handle adversity and how to live with little and yet be thankful for all that they had everyday.  She promised them, that no matter their circumstances, the Lord was taking care of their every need.  They lived that out during those depression years.  I can hear my Mom's voice in my head, echoing Grandmama's motto of  "Doing the best that you can in everything you do and having faith the Lord will take care of you!"  Mom and her sisters' refrain to those words have always been to this day, "That's right!"  All four of them supported each other during these times, in the way a family sticks together for better or worse.

When I think how far we've come, what an inspiration Mom has been to me all my life,  tears come.  I admit it.   These photos I've never seen until just a few days ago of my mother as a child..... what a treasure to see them.

She went to camp just like me.... loved her dolls, like I loved my stuffed animals,  wanted to be a mom one day,
Was in the garden....loved her siblings and much, much more.
My Moma, so precious, and not even knowing what a beautiful life that was still before her.  The love of her mother and sisters carrying each other through the current times would lead one another onward to that life of "love" waiting for each of them, in more happy years to come!  She had not met my Daddy yet....oh my goodness what love was waiting around the corner there!  She didn't know she would have a life long illness with Type 1 Diabetes in a few years, but would live with it in grace.  She didn't know so many things that were in store for her.....like being a Mom to Tom and I!  So many blessings to unfold, life's gifts to unwrap, adversity overcome, and joy abundant.  So much life to experience!
This little girl would teach ME one day how to love!  She'd wrap her arms around my heart, never letting me go.

So very amazing.... truly wonderful the Lord is!

Daddy is 80

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Daddy turned 80 today and we showered him with love!

Tom brought him over to our house for lunch.  The boys made him cards and signs and we made sandwiches and had Apple Pie for dessert.  It was small, it was quiet, but it was filled with love, kisses and hugs.  Just like he likes it....

Every day I'm thankful he's still with us in our lives and I love him to pieces....

Tom and I are in a tie for #2 fan!
Moma will always be #1.....even in heaven.  ♥
Dad loves to call Philip "Little Man"....
Apple Pie!
Chocolate Pie!
 Do they love him?
Does he love them?  He never leaves us without wanting a kiss.
I'm just so content that he was happy and having a good day today....
Tom said Dad wanted to come to my house everyday for lunch.  Oh I wish I just lived around the corner five minutes from the retirement community, where I could just "pop" in at a moment's notice.  Dad wishes he lived next door to Tom or I, I think. You can still live in the same city as big as ours and miss someone.... The big person missing today was Mom, yet I know she's in our hearts as we move through our grief.  Always and forever with us....
Philip said it best...." 80! Is good!"
We love you Dad.
